The Tale Continues
Telltale
Games delivers its third installment of A New Frontier with Episode Three - Above The Law and we begin the same way we ended episode 2, in utter shock. David, Javier's brother, is not only alive but is one of the leaders of The New Frontier.
Kate, who was shot by one of David's men is now safe in the hospital at Richmond. As David carries Kate and walks off with his son Gabe, his men ask Javi to go with your people into a quarantined room before you're allowed to come out. It's just the way things work there.
David meets with you to ask what has happened over the last few years. He is upset you couldn't keep Mariana alive but you are set with a few options to select and more or less it runs Javi to say that it was David's men that ended Mariana's life. David is shocked but he tells his brother to keep it quiet and he will deal with his people.
During a leaders meeting, Javier meets Joan and the other leaders of the New Frontier. Your previous confrontations with The New Frontier are revealed and the decision is made for you to leave even though you have your brothers support.
Without revealing too much more in the story and episode, we do have another flashback with Clementine and baby AJ as she is trying to protect AJ while under the care of The New Frontier. Javi also hears what happened to Clem and AJ but his support is still with David as he truly believes what is going on inside of Richmond and The New Frontier is going on behind David's back.
Controls & New Features
As mentioned in the Episode 1 and Episode 2 reviews, the
controls in this season have been improved to look and feel much more
fresh and cinematic than in previous Walking Dead seasons and other episodic adventures of
Telltale Games. Now we see the button selections embedded and cell
shaded in the cinematic experience of the game and not just displaying
as a flat looking button select as in previous seasons of The Walking
Dead.
Fighting with The Walkers or other groups has improved greatly. This can be thought of as an
advancement of these characters abilities as well. Since they have been
on the road for four years, they know a lot more about combat than they
did in previous seasons.
In Episode 3 - Above The Law, the reaction time to button triggering in fights or battling is a bit quicker. Javi needs to be on his toes a lot more this time around in order to survive.
A
new addition to the Telltale Series Games titles is Crowd Play. It was
discussed in the Episode 1 and Episode 2 Reviews but will be explained again as it is a
lot of fun and highly recommended to try at least once with friends and
family. Crowd Play is a
fun feature to have people in the room play along with your decision
making and selections. The local multiplayer mode allows up to 12
players to help you with your decisions and your participants will be
accessing a unique website so only you and your family can take part in
the action.
Audio/Visuals
The
Walking Dead: A New Frontier is now a true cinematic adventure
rather than a video game with all the updates in graphics and seamless
cut scenes. The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode 3 is darker than the first two episodes and even more gory and gruesome. Now Javi has been given a weapon of his liking, a baseball bat. He's a natural with the bat and Javi brings those dings with the bat that much louder when he hits those sweet cranial spots.
Conclusion
The
Walking Dead: A New Frontier provides us with a very emotionally charged story and characters you can relate to immediately. In Episode 3, we see ourselves getting more involved with our protagonist and how Javi cares deeply for the family he's been on the road with for four years.
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode 3 - Above The Law can be
finished in about 90 to 120 minutes and there are a few decisions to
make in this episode that will leave you to cringe depending on what you
do. Episode 3 was definitely a gory, emotional episode. As always, try out the episodes multiple times to get the full experience with multiple outcomes.
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is highly recommended and is available now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Check it out here.
