The Tale Continues
Telltale
Games delivers its fourth installment of A New Frontier with Episode Four- Thicker Than Water and we begin the episode in a different way this time around with a Flashback Sequence.
David and Javi are shown in the batting cages before the zombie apocalypse happened. David is trying to tell Javi something very important but Javi is very full of himself and won't stop showing off. As David finally spills the beans, the two brothers walk off the batting cages and we are now brought to present time with David and Javi being thrown into the quarantine cell for their actions against Joan and some of her men.
David and Javi exchange words with Joan as she tell David she wants to speak with him in private and he has lost his position at Richmond. When David leaves, its up to Javi to break out of the cell the New Frontier has you in. As you are ready to make your escape, Gabe finds you at the window of the cell and helps.
Gabe and Javi meet up with Tripp, Eleanor and Kate and plan to roll out to help David. The plan is for Gabe and Javi to go out with Ava as she is familiar with the town of Richmond. As you make your way into the infirmary Javi is injured and needs medical attention quickly.
Once in the clinic area, Javi is greeted once again by Clementine who hasn't run off but is still looking for answers about Baby AJ. She helps Javi get treated and as this is going on there is another flashback with Clementine and the choice you made in season 2 of either Kenny or Jane. Then Telltale cuts to 13 months later to moments after you were kicked out of The New Frontier.
Without
revealing too much more in the story and episode, are faced with the tough task of rescuing David without the help of Tripp and Elanor. This is a daunting task to be down two people in your search for your brother.
Controls & New Features
As mentioned in the previous Episode reviews, the
controls in this season have been improved to look and feel much more
fresh and cinematic than in previous Walking Dead seasons and other episodic adventures of
Telltale Games. We have the button selections embedded and cell
shaded in the cinematic experience of the game and not just displaying
as a flat looking button select as in previous seasons of The Walking
Dead.
Fighting with The Walkers or other groups has improved greatly. This can be thought of as an
advancement of these characters abilities as well. Since they have been
on the road for four years, they know a lot more about combat than they
did in previous seasons.
In
Episode 4 - Thicker Than Water, the reaction time to button triggering in
fights or battling is a lot quicker. Javi needs to be even more on his toes a lot
more this time around in order to survive.
A
new addition to the Telltale Series Games titles is Crowd Play. It was
discussed in all of the previous Reviews but it still comes very highly recommended to try at least once with family and friends. Crowd Play is a
fun feature to have people in the room play along with your decision
making and selections. The local multiplayer mode allows up to 12
players to help you with your decisions and your participants will be
accessing a unique website so only you and your family can take part in
the action.
Audio/Visuals
The
Walking Dead: A New Frontier is now a true cinematic adventure
rather than a video game with all the updates in graphics and seamless
cut scenes. The Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode 4 continues to get dark and gruesome and as you spend more time invested you become even more emotional when anything happens to your friends. There are more eerie moments when you sneak around Richmond.
Conclusion
The
Walking Dead: A New Frontier provides us with a very emotionally
charged story and characters you can relate to immediately. In Episode 4, we see ourselves getting more involved with our protagonist and how
Javi cares deeply for the family and for Kate who he's been on the road with for four
years.
The
Walking Dead: A New Frontier Episode 4 - Thicker Than Water can be
finished in about 120 minutes and there are a few decisions to
make in this episode that will leave you to cringe depending on what you
do or what is done to your family. Episode 4 was an extremely emotional episode and had moments of gore and bloodshed. As always, try
out the episodes multiple times to get the full experience with multiple
outcomes.
The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is highly recommended and is available now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Check it out here.
